How long does it take to learn how to draw anatomy? ›

It's something that you slowly build alongside your other skills, so in total it might take a couple of years to really get a good understanding of anatomy. But you don't have to think about it as this huge project that you only succeed with after two years. Break it down into smaller chunks.

Drawing organic forms of a human body that is subject to foreshortening is incredibly challenging for beginners because it conflicts with their preconceived idea of how big a part of a body should appear relative to the rest of the body.

When you first approach figure drawing, you need to start out with establishing the basic volumes of the figure using spheres, boxes, and cylinders. Knowledge of anatomy cannot be underestimated when it comes to drawing realistic figures from life, memory, and imagination. Professional artists draw what they know, not what they see.

Commonly between 5 to 10 years of proper training to reach a level of proficiency. When attending an art class you will only learn information that you are ready to learn at the time. When you retake the course a year later you will learn new information that you were not ready to learn a year before.

I found embryonic anatomy to be the most difficult section. Our anatomy professor loved to show film clips of sliced embryonic pigs, etc. It was hard to keep track of all the structures that formed and then involuted or changed into other structures. As far as adult anatomy went, neuroanatomy was the hardest.

Every part of the body presents a different challenge for drawing. For example, hands and feet are very difficult because they require so much detail and exact proportioning.

Should I learn gesture drawing or anatomy first? ›

I would suggest learning about human anatomy first. I understand that gestures might be confusing if you do not know how different body parts affect each other. I would definitely recommend learning about plastic anatomy. The amount of information may be overwhelming, so don't try to understand everything all at once.

The system with the fewest parts to learn is most likely the Urinary system. There are fewer parts and fewer terms to learn. Flow of blood into and out of the kidney is straight forward and the passage of filtrate and urine is too.

If your goals have to do with drawing from minimal reference or from imagination, and/or if you want to draw the human figure, Anatomy is a great place for you to begin.

Observation: Study anatomy, how people walk, their poses, the different types of bodies… Create a reference gallery in your mind and, if possible, take pictures! Think in 3D: To understand a figure/shape, it is best to analyze it from different perspectives.

Yes, learning anatomy will be hard. Super hard. It'll take plenty of time, patience and a LOT of practice. However, you will come out surprisingly confident about your new skills.
