Asia Cup Trophy Dispute: BCCI and PCB Chief Meet, Negotiations Begin (2025)

A tense standoff over a cricket trophy? It seems the Asia Cup victory has sparked a diplomatic challenge between India and Pakistan! This is the story of how a sporting triumph turned into a battle of wills, and what it means for the future of cricket relations.

On November 8, 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Devajit Saikia, confirmed a crucial meeting. The meeting involved Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Mohsin Naqvi, to resolve the matter of the Asia Cup trophy. Naqvi, also the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), made a last-minute appearance at the ICC Meeting in Dubai, where the trophy issue was addressed.

Here's the situation: India won the eight-team tournament, but the trophy wasn't handed over. The core issue? India's refusal to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who is also Pakistan's Interior Minister. A significant power struggle emerged between the BCCI and Naqvi.

Initially, it was expected that Naqvi would attend the meeting, but he arrived in Dubai at the last minute. Discussions took place between him and the BCCI. Saikia mentioned that he was part of both informal and formal ICC meetings. He and the PCB chief had a separate meeting facilitated by the ICC. Saikia described the meeting as a positive step towards negotiation, with both sides participating cordially.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Asia Cup trophy is currently at the ACC headquarters in Dubai. Naqvi instructed the staff not to move the trophy without his permission, as he insisted on personally handing it over.

Saikia is hopeful for an early resolution, stating that 'the ice has been broken.' Both sides are expected to explore options for an amicable solution.

Saikia added, “Both sides will work out something to solve the issue at the earliest. The ice has been broken now, so various options will be worked out.”

“There will be options from the other side as well, and we will also give options on how to settle this issue and come to an amicable solution,” he added.

And this is the part most people miss... The 2025 Asia Cup, which India won by defeating Pakistan by five wickets at the Dubai International Stadium, was already marked by tension. The Indian camp's refusal to shake hands with Pakistan players, following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, set the stage for this post-tournament drama.

What do you think? Do you believe this is a minor issue, or does it reflect deeper tensions between the two cricket boards? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
