A Heartwarming Tale: The Coffee Incident's Journey and a New Chapter
A beloved café, a growing family, and a community's support - a perfect recipe for a heartwarming story!
After almost six years of brewing happiness, The Coffee Incident, a beloved café in Glen Innes, is up for sale, and the reason behind this decision is as heartwarming as the café itself. Owner Holly Coldham and her partner, Tom, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child, a baby boy due in mid-November, and this has sparked a bittersweet transition.
"It's a decision filled with mixed emotions," Holly shared. "Owning a café was my lifelong dream, and it's been an integral part of my identity. Yet, the choice was clear; starting a family has always been my top priority, and I want to embrace this new chapter wholeheartedly."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Holly's journey with The Coffee Incident began when she purchased the business from her former boss, Chris Glennan, who had owned it for over seven years. With a bold move, she returned home to Glen Innes, ready to create her own path.
"Working for Chris taught me so much. When I moved back, it felt natural to reconnect with familiar faces and systems. It was like coming home, and I knew this was the right step."
What started as a leap of faith quickly became a defining period in Holly's life. Early mornings, laughter, and a growing love for her community filled her days. The Coffee Incident, initially a small space at 316 Grey Street, served as a haven for great coffee, cakes, and toasties. But Holly's time in Toowoomba sparked a vision for more.
"I learned the art of presentation there. Every day, I prepared an array of sweets and savouries for their display cabinet. I brought that idea to Glen Innes, and it worked wonders!"
As the café flourished, about 2.5 years ago, Holly and her team moved to a larger space at 191 Grey Street. "We needed room to grow!" she exclaimed. The new location allowed them to expand their menu, cabinet offerings, and dining area, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that customers adored.
When asked about The Coffee Incident's unique charm, Holly emphasized the people behind it all. "Our atmosphere is our strength. My team is exceptional; they're like a close-knit friendship group. Customers feel that joy and connection, and it sets us apart."
And this is the part most people miss...
Running a successful café came with its challenges. Holly admitted, "I was naive about the complexities of business ownership. Taking over at 24 was a steep learning curve. I had to grow up fast, learn every role, and understand the business side. It was eye-opening!"
This experience shaped Holly's approach to mentoring her team. "I love helping others with their ventures. My team has entrepreneurial spirits, and I support their side hustles. Collaborating has become my favorite part!"
As Holly prepares to pass the torch, she hopes the new owner will continue to nurture The Coffee Incident's potential. "There's so much room to grow! The venue's license opens doors for night events, and the space is versatile. It could be a retail hub or an extended menu - the possibilities are endless!"
When asked what she'll miss the most, Holly's answer was heartfelt. "My team, without a doubt. They're an incredible group, and their work ethic, energy, and joy are unmatched. The atmosphere they create is truly special, and that's what I'll cherish the most."
For now, The Coffee Incident continues to thrive, offering the same warm hospitality that has made it a local favorite. "The café deserves love and attention. It's a magical place, and I believe there's someone out there who will cherish it as much as Chris and I do."
As Holly and Tom prepare for their baby's arrival, Glen Innes celebrates new beginnings and fond farewells. The legacy of The Coffee Incident, built on love, caffeine, and community, will forever be cherished.
