Cole Palmer's World Cup Dreams in Jeopardy? Tuchel's England Squad Dilemma Explained (2025)

A worrying development for Chelsea's Cole Palmer: Thomas Tuchel's England squad selection strategy could leave him out in the cold. Tuchel has made it clear that he intends to limit the number of central attacking midfielders, despite the abundance of talent in that position. This decision could impact Palmer's chances of making the 2026 World Cup squad.

Palmer has been unfortunate with injuries, missing the last three international breaks due to a persistent groin issue sustained during Chelsea's pre-season. While not his fault, time is running out for him to impress the England head coach.

Even those who have featured more regularly are not guaranteed a spot, as Tuchel mentioned Palmer as a potential option. "At the moment, if we maintain our structure, they cannot play together," Tuchel stated, referring to Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden. He further explained the balance and structure required, highlighting the specialization of wingers.

Tuchel's preferred formation includes a number six, eight, ten, and nine, with a lot of overlap, especially in the number ten position. He named several players vying for this role, including Palmer, but made it clear that not everyone will make the cut.

Bellingham and Morgan Rogers currently lead the pecking order for the number ten role, according to Tuchel. "The competition is between the two of them," he said, emphasizing that their friendship can make for a healthy rivalry.

Tuchel has previously expressed concern over Palmer's injury, stating, "He was only in the June camp. That is concerning. The most important thing is that he can play without pain, as the groin issue can become chronic. When he's fit and in rhythm, he can decide matches."

Palmer is expected to return to Chelsea later this month, but unfortunately, this international break is the last one before March, just a few months before the next World Cup.

So, will Palmer's injury woes cost him a spot in England's World Cup squad? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
