Kitchen Measurements

Tablespoons and teaspoons are units of volume. Typically these kitchen measurements are used for smaller quantities of both wet and dry ingredients like spices and extracts. You’ll find teaspoons and tablespoons in both metric and imperial systems for baking and cooking.

Imperial vs Metric

Most countries around the world use theMetricSystem of measurements, which includes likes meters, grams and liters. However, the Imperial System still prevails in the United States and measurements are done in feet, inches, and pounds. Instant Pot.

Luckily, both systems recognize teaspoons, tablespoons and cups as measurements of volume that are specific to cooking.

In fact, I find myself converting all sorts of measurements to tablespoons. For example, knowing how many tablespoons are in a stick of butter is something that I find quite useful {there are 8 tablespoons in a stick of butter, BTW}.

I find that when baking, it is important that your measurements be quite precise. So follow the tips below to ensure you get an accurate measurement.

When cooking other types of dishes, your measurements can be a little more flexible. If you are unsure, it’s always best to start with less as you can always add more.

How To Measure Ingredients Properly

  1. Use the appropriate size of measuring cup or spoon for the job.
  2. For dry ingredients (flour, sugar, spices), completely fill the vessel to the top and make sure it is level. Use the back of a kitchen knife to scrape across the top to flatten.
  3. Measure liquid ingredients in cups or jugs that are designed to measure liquids. Don’t use your dry ingredient cups! Set the vessel on a flat, even surface and position yourself so the measurement mark is at eye level.
