In a world where political feuds dominate headlines, sometimes a comedian's name gets thrown into the mix. Seth Meyers, the sharp-witted host of Late Night, recently found himself the target of Donald Trump's ire. But how did Meyers respond to this unexpected 'shoutout'?
Meyers' response to Trump's public call for his firing was, in a word, classic: he called it a "thoughtful piece of fan mail." Opening his 'A Closer Look' segment, he quipped about the novelty of being mentioned on TV before midnight. He even joked about how he usually handles such situations.
But here's where it gets interesting: Meyers wasn't particularly bothered by the attack. He even pointed out that he shares something in common with other public figures on Trump’s 'bad side,' most of whom are entangled in the ongoing MAGA feud.
"I’m also aware that being attacked by the president this weekend doesn’t make me special in any way, shape or form; I was simply on the same sh–list as Christopher Wray, James Comey, Indiana Republicans, Thomas Massie, Rand Paul, Marjorie Taylor Greene and and former President Joe Biden," he explained.
And this is the part most people miss: Meyers actually welcomed Trump's right to voice his displeasure with his show, even offering some grammar advice. He humorously critiqued Trump's use of a dangling modifier, pointing out the ambiguity in the sentence: "He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage." Meyers quipped, "It sounds like something a dowager countess says in a Victorian murder-mystery while she’s staring out the drawing room windows."
But what exactly was Trump so upset about? Meyers noted his confusion, as the Saturday Truth Social post seemed to be referencing a Friday episode, a repeat of a show that had already drawn Trump's criticism. Meyers took the assertion he's "suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS)" rather "seriously," because Trump is "clearly a medical expert, as evidenced by your description of your recent MRI.”
Controversy & Comment Hooks: Meyers concluded by referencing the spat between Trump and Greene, saying, "I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I finally have something in common with Marjorie Taylor Greene. You know, Trump’s really bringing the country together. The only difference is, she got a cool nickname: ‘Marjorie Traitor Greene’ is way cooler than ‘Marble Mouth Meyers.'"
