SunSmart Parks Project: Onkaparinga and Cancer Council SA Partnership (2025)

Onkaparinga's SunSmart Revolution: A Partnership for Skin Cancer Prevention

Onkaparinga, a vibrant city in South Australia, is taking a bold step towards sun safety with a unique collaboration. The City of Onkaparinga has joined forces with Cancer Council SA, marking a South Australian first, to bring SunSmart awareness to its residents and visitors.

The initiative, known as the SunSmart Parks Project, is a creative approach to educating the community. Subtle yet eye-catching pavement stickers have been strategically placed in 12 parks and playgrounds and 8 community centers across the city. These stickers feature the beloved Cancer Council mascot, Sid the seagull, delivering a crucial message: 'Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide'.

But here's where it gets interesting. The stickers don't just promote sun protection; they also provide practical tools. They include links to the Cancer Council's website and QR codes that offer real-time UV alerts and live UV levels specific to your location. This innovative approach ensures that residents and visitors are not only reminded to protect themselves but also provided with immediate information about UV exposure.

The recommended sun protection measures are simple yet effective: when UV levels reach 3 or higher, it's time to take action. These measures include wearing sun-protective clothing, applying SPF 50 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen, donning a broad-brimmed hat, seeking shade, and wearing wrap-around sunglasses. These steps are crucial in preventing skin cancer, a disease that claims the lives of over 2,000 Australians annually.

The launch of the SunSmart Parks Project was celebrated at Niipu-niipu Wama/Morton Park, where City of Onkaparinga CEO Phu Nguyen and Cancer Council SA Chief Executive Kerry Rowlands joined forces with Sid the seagull. Mr. Nguyen emphasized the project's impact, stating that it will provide life-saving reminders to thousands of residents and visitors.

"Our community's parks, playgrounds, and community centers are beloved spaces, and these visual cues will encourage people to protect themselves while enjoying them," Mr. Nguyen said. "Our shade provision policy is complemented by these pavement stickers, offering expert advice that promotes the health and well-being of our residents."

Cancer Council SA's Kerry Rowlands shared the importance of this partnership, especially given the alarming statistics of skin cancer in Australia. With two-thirds of Australians expected to be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, the Cancer Council's SunSmart message is more critical than ever.

"Not only does sun protection reduce the risk of skin cancer, but modeling SunSmart behaviors for our children is a powerful way to ensure they adopt these practices throughout their lives," Ms. Rowlands explained. "As summer approaches and families spend more time outdoors, these stickers serve as a timely reminder to check UV levels and protect skin using the five essential sun protection measures."

The City of Onkaparinga's initiative is a groundbreaking step, and the Cancer Council hopes it will inspire similar projects across the state. By empowering the community with knowledge and practical tools, this partnership is a shining example of how local governments and health organizations can work together to improve public health.
